Frequently Asked Questions

About ONEdna

1What are Genes and DNA?+

Each person has the same set of genes – about 20,000 in all. The differences between people come from slight variations in these genes. For example, a person with black hair doesn’t have the “black hair gene” while a person with blonde hair has the “blonde hair gene.” Instead, all people have genes for hair color, and different versions of these genes dictate whether someone will have black hair or blonde hair.

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. It’s the genetic code that determines all the characteristics of a living thing. Basically, your DNA is what makes you, you!

You got your DNA from your parents, we call it “hereditary” (information that is passed on to the next generation). Nobody else in the world will have DNA the same as you, unless you have an identical twin.

2How are genes related to your health?+

Your genes helps explain what makes you unique, why family members look alike, and why some diseases run in families. Taking time to learn about it will help you understand your own and health and make healthy choices.

Most common diseases are a result of both your genes and your environment. Your environment can include personal choices, such as what foods you eat and how much you exercise, and external factors, such as stress and air quality.

It is important to understand that most times your genes do not determine your health but by understanding your genes, you are much more knowledgeable to live a pro-active and healthy lifestyle. For example, your genes can double the risk of heart disease, but a good lifestyle cuts it in half. Just as important, a terrible lifestyle erases about half of the benefits of good genetics.

3What is ONEdna, what will the test will cover?+

ONEdna provides a comprehensive view and analysis of your genes. The results may give you insights into your health status and risk for disease, optimal dietary and nutrients response, understanding of which medications may work better and an optional cancer screen to identify risk of common cancers:

1. Health risk – Discover your genetic risk for highly preventable health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and obesity. Understanding your risk allows you to make changes to your diet and lifestyle, reducing your overall risk of developing such health conditions.

2. Dietary & nutrients – Optimize your diet by understanding how your genes affect your response to foods and nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, Vitamin C and more. Eat a diet most suited to your genes.

3. Drug response – Understand whether over 100 FDA-approved drugs are more likely to help you or hurt you. Adverse drug reactions affect millions of people around the world – prevent it from happening to you.

4. Inherited cancer screen (optional screening if you have family history of cancer) – Identify if you have a genetic mutation associated with 8 common cancers: breast, ovarian, colorectal, melanoma, pancreatic, prostate, stomach and uterine. Early screening and detection of cancer risk can save lives.

9Why is the cancer screening test optional?+

The hereditary cancer risk screening for ONEdna is an opt-in test that individuals with a family history of cancer can elect to take to assess the possible cancer risk supported by scientific research. Early screening and detection of cancer risk can save lives, and by understanding individuals’ risk for common cancers through genetic mutations can help individuals take preventive action. However, the cancer screening may lead to discovery of sensitive and/or unsought information about your health. Additionally, environmental and lifestyle factors often play a large role in your risk for developing cancer, and the cancer screening test will not be able to reveal any information unrelated to hereditary factors, thus only recommended for individuals with family history of cancer by institutional guidelines.

Please also note that your inherited cancer screen results will not be shared with your insurance provider or other 3rd party.
